Sainz and Al-Attiyah: Volkswagen double-pack separated by three seconds


Wolfsburg (01 July 2009). Volkswagen’s internal duel for the lead at the Rallye dos Sertões has become even more dramatic two days before the end of the cross-country rally through Brazil. The factory pairing Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz Senra (E/E) decided the eighth leg between Petrolina and Juazeiro do Norte in its favour with a 1.37-minute advantage, relegating Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D) in another Race Touareg to second place on the stage. The gap between the two leading rally vehicles has now shrunk to three seconds. The leg covering a total distance of 438 kilometres featured winding roads with stony and sandy sections and demanded the co-drivers’ full concentration due to hidden directional changes. The Brazilian duo Maurício Neves/Eduardo Bampi finished the stage in third place and thus completed the one-two-three exploit of the Volkswagen squad.

"The ‘Sertões´ has evolved into an extremely thrilling duel between Nasser Al-Attiyah and Carlos Sainz. Today Carlos Sainz benefited from the fact that Nasser Al-Attiyah had to start in front of him and open the course. Tomorrow the situation will be reversed. So, we´ll have to wait until the end of the rally to see who will decide this extremely demanding event in their favour. It´s a matter of seconds.”

"Today it was clearly beneficial not having to be the first car to go out. I followed Nasser Al-Attiyah´s track. Even though that wasn´t the best option at all times I was able to make up the two minutes of starting difference, but wasn´t able to overtake in the dust. It was a very rough and difficult leg. I´m happy to have won it.”

#302 - Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q), 2nd place leg / 1st place overall
"A tough day for us in the cockpit. The track had lots of sand, some rocks and loads of hidden branch-offs for my co-driver Timo Gottschalk that were not always clearly marked in the roadbook. We had to turn around a few times and that cost us some time. It´ll be a close fight and a nail-biting duel with Carlos Sainz up to the very end.”

#309 - Maurício Neves (BR), 3rd place leg / 7th place overall
"The leg today suited me very well and featured everything the Rallye dos Sertões is known for. It included a little bit of every type of terrain. Navigation was very demanding too. Of course I´m very happy with third place and a day without any mistakes.”

Number of the day At the Rallye dos Sertões the Volkswagen factory team is carrying a sufficient supply of mosquito repellents and suntan lotion - 20 litres of each - for the total of 35 team members - from the motorsport director to the mechanic.

Sainz ahead of Al-Attiyah: change of lead in Volkswagen double

Wolfsburg (29 June 2009). 4:2 in the team-internal duel for stage wins; the “blue” lead has changed again: The Volkswagen duo Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz Senra (E/E) took the overall lead again on the sixth leg of the Rallye dos Sertões, narrowly relegating their team-mates Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D) in another factory-fielded Race Touareg to position two. After his second stage victory at the cross-country rally through Brazil Sainz is now 5m 08s ahead of Al-Attiyah who finished the stage from Luís Edoardo Magalhães to Barra as the runner-up after a repair stop. After finishing the stage in fourth place the third Volkswagen pairing Maurício Neves/Eduardo Bampi (BR/BR) is ranking ninth overall. The sixth and seventh day of the rally form a combined marathon leg on which no evening service by the mechanics is permitted.

"The sixth leg showed that in sport nothing is predictable - particularly not in cross-country rally racing. The smallest oversight may cost minutes, and perhaps even the whole rally. Nasser Al-Attiyah and Maurício Neves lost a lot of time today because of these imponderables. Like the ‘Dakar´, the ‘Sertões´ is an unrelenting rally which needs to be mastered before anything else. But we´re continuing to head in the right direction to successfully achieve this.”

"A really tough and very difficult leg containing very narrow trails on the one hand and quick sections on the other, which made maximum demands on us drivers as well as the material. Tomorrow the second part of the marathon leg will follow without service tonight at the bivouac. That´s why we proceeded with caution today.”

#302 - Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q), 2nd place leg / 2nd place overall
"That was simply a case of misfortune. Apparently we hit a tree stump that was hidden in the grass stump in such an unfortunate way that we had to change the right rear tie rod. The repair cost us at least 15 minutes as well as the lead. Today you could see that the rally is tough and long. That is also true for the next four days.”

"Today we lost some time again. We came to a place where the soil was heavily washed out, which hadn´t been marked in the roadbook. We braked but got stuck with the front end and had to be pulled out by a rival. That cost us quite a bit of time.”

Numbers of the day The roadbooks of the first half of the rally comprised about 300 pages and 2,100 pictures. The co-driver would issue instructions every 750 metres on average - at an average speed of 91 kph this corresponds to every 29.7 seconds.

Volkswagen continues setting the pace at "Sertões"

Wolfsburg (26 June 2009). The Volkswagen three-pack on the third leg: Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz Senra (E/E), Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D) and Maurício Neves/Eduardo Bampi (BR/BR) finished the third leg of the Rallye dos Sertões in places one, two and three. The fastest time on the stage between Cidade de Goiás and Minaçu was set by Nasser Al-Attiyah, who is at the wheel of a Race Touareg for the first time in Brazil. On the 317 kilometres of the special stage with tight, twisty sections on gravel and narrow trails the factory duos in the 280-hp diesel prototypes from Wolfsburg delivered a cohesive team performance: Carlos Sainz finished the third day 58 seconds behind Nasser Al-Attiyah by setting the second-best time and thus defended an overall lead of 42 seconds. The Brazilian pairing Maurício Neves/Eduardo Bampi was classified with the third-best time, ten minutes behind stage winner Al-Attiyah.

"Today, the entire squad delivered a cohesive performance on what has been the most demanding leg of the rally so far. After 317 kilometres, all three teams came within ten minutes of each other although the drivers as well as the navigators had to work with full concentration and the ‘Brazilian´ car had to overtake numerous other vehicles.”

"It was a really strenuous leg which we tackled by taking calculated risks. In the early stages there were many tight, twisty passages which had to be driven with extreme precision. We were able to drive faster only on the last 80 kilometres. On the whole it was a good stage for us.”

#302 - Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q), 1st place leg / 2nd place overall
"We took things with a bit more caution today because the demands have increased yet again. So, I´m more than happy with the result. For me, completing as many kilometres in the car and gathering experiences and impressions is still the most important aspect. ‘Well done´ to my co-driver Timo Gottschalk, who did a very good job today.”

#309 - Maurício Neves (BR), 3rd place leg / 16th place overall
"This was a stage full of variety! Many jumps, narrow trails and lots of gravel demanded full concentration, particularly the numerous overtaking manoeuvres, because after our unfortunate day yesterday we had to pass many cars. That cost us some time. After our cautious start we attacked in the end.”

Number of the day On the third leg of the Rallye dos Sertões Carlos Sainz generated a unique, maximum braking pressure of 76.6 bar. This roughly equates to the hydrostatic pressure at a water depth of 766 metres.

RALLY SERTOES - ARRIVÉE

ZE HÉLIO REMPORTE LE RALLYE SERTOES EN MOTO, DOUBLÉ POUR LES VOLKSWAGEN EN AUTO !

La seizième édition du Rallye Sertoes s’est terminée tout à côté de la plage de Natal, ville balnéaire du nord-est brésilien. Le ciel était noir et la pluie menaçante quand les premiers pilotes moto sont montés sur le podium d’arrivée.
L’ambiance était électrique mais Ze Hélio, chaleureusement acclamé par le public et les participants, a carrément fait tomber la foudre en annonçant au micro : « J’ai gagné devant les meilleurs pilotes au Monde, devant le team KTM… et devant le pilote le moins apprécié au Monde : Cyril Despres ! Il est mauvais perdant et a refusé de me serrer la main quand j’ai voulu le féliciter ! »

Hier soir, après être arrivé au bivouac de Mossoro sans carton, Cyril Despres a été pénalisé de 5’, ce qui a permis au pilote Honda de remporter le Rallye avec 4’49 sur le Français qui n’a pas apprécié l’application du règlement.

Mais si Despres (KTM) est mauvais perdant et s’est fait huer, les Brésiliens ont ovationné David Casteu (KTM) pour sa troisième place ! Le Français, accueilli comme un enfant du pays par KTM Brésil, termine devant Marc Coma (KTM), Ruben Faria (Honda), Pedro Bianchi (Yamaha), Helder Rodrigues (Honda) et Jacek Czachor (KTM). Christophe Barrière-Varju a emmené son petit kangourou à la très belle 25e place, Ludo Boinnard finit 27e et Oscar Polli 33e.

En auto, sans surprise, Giniel de Villiers et Dirk von Zitzewitz (Volkswagen) remportent le Rallye Sertoes devant leurs coéquipiers Mark Miller et Ralph Pitchford.
« C’était une belle spéciale, raconte Giniel, mais dans les dunes, il y avait tellement de way point et on allait si vite que le GPS n’arrivait pas à suivre ! »
Pour Kris Nissen (directeur du Volkswagen Motorsport), venu soutenir son équipe à l’arrivée, cette participation au Sertoes est un bon entraînement pour le Dakar. « Nous sommes venus au Brésil pour gagner et tester nos Touaregs sur un terrain différent de l’Afrique. Ce fut une très bonne expérience et toute l’équipe Volkswagen a fait un très bon travail ! »
Belle nouvelle deuxième place en spéciale pour Krisztof Holowczyc et Jean-Marc Fortin qui, malheureusement, terminent 15e au général mais 5e auto FIA derrière Oscar Montanõ et Ariel Jaton.
La troisième place au général revient à Reinaldo Vareta sur un Mitsubishi tandis que Jean de Azevedo, après ses déboires, se classe 6e et Carlo de Gavardo, qui s’est retrouvé sans traction aujourd’hui mais termine tout de même deuxième de sa catégorie dans la spéciale, est 19e.

Ce soir, la caravane du Rallye Sertoes se prépare à prendre un acompte sur la fête de remise des prix organisée demain soir…

RALLYE SERTOES -9e étape

9e étape : Crateus – Mossoro
Liaison : 134 km – Spéciale : 166 km – Liaison : 218 km – Total : 518 km.

L’avant-dernière spéciale du Rallye Sertoes a été raccourcie de 55 km la pluie ayant fait déborder une rivière qui a créé un bourbier infranchissable.
Il n’était pas aisé de naviguer dans le secteur sélectif très technique, étroit et encadré de végétation… Au contraire d’hier, le terrain fut propice à Ze Hélio et à sa petite Honda 450 qui garde l’avantage sur Cyril Despres.

Le Portugais, Ruben Faria, remporte à nouveau la spéciale devant le pilote Français qui, à l’arrivée au CH d’arrivée au bivouac, s’est rendu compte qu’il avait perdu son carton. La pénalité infligée étant de 5’ au général, Ze Hélio, troisième de la spéciale, peut dormir plus tranquillement, son avance sur Despres est désormais de 6’54.

Marc Coma se classe quatrième malgré la mousse du pneu avant et arrière en très mauvais état. Le pilote catalan n’a pas beaucoup aimé la spéciale au contraire de David Casteu qui termine 5e, assurant sa troisième place au général. Jordi Viladoms est 6e et a légèrement abîmé sa roue arrière sur une pierre.

Le sympathique Sthênio finit 7e et Helder Rodrigues 11e devant Victor Riveira qui roule à 90 km/h de peur de casser son moteur qui consomme huile et eau : « J’ai u un problème moteur il y a quatre jours mais celui de rechange était pire… nous avons donc remis le premier, rafistolé… »
Le Polonais Czachor est 18e devant son coéquipier, Przygonski, tandis qu’Oscar Polli n’a pas roulé hier après s’être étiré un muscle de la cuisse mais a repris la piste aujourd’hui et finit 30e .
Jaime Prohens, après avoir, lui aussi cassé le moteur, est 36e et Christophe Barrière-Varju, 40e : « J’ai adoré la spéciale aujourd’hui, explique le Franco-australien, et je suis heureux d’être remonté à la 25e place au général. Mais je n’ai pas encore compris comment le Quad parti derrière moi est arrivé avant sans m’avoir doublé… et je ne me suis pas perdu ! »
Moins de chance pour Ludovic Boinnard dont la carcasse du pneu, abîmée, a déjanté, cassé les rayons et bloqué la roue. Heureusement pour Ludo, cela s’est passé à basse vitesse…

En auto, Mark Miller et Ralph Pitchford remportent la victoire d’étape après avoir connu des problèmes de turbo avant le départ : « Nos techniciens ont réparé la panne sur la ligne de départ, raconte Mark, un grand sourire sur les lèvres. Mais nous avons pris le départ loin derrière, au milieu des Brésiliens. Les commissaires nous ont alors monté une radio pour avertir les concurrents devant nous car les concurrents du championnat vrésilien n’ont pas de Sentinel et c’est ainsi qu’ils communiquent entre eux… J’ai vite donné une leçon d’Espagnol à Ralph pour qu’il puisse annoncer notre numéro mais ce ne fut pas simple de doubler et j’ai attaqué à fond ! »
Krysztof Holowczyc a profité du terrain technique pour mettre lui aussi du gaz dans cette spéciale et termine second à 2’23 tandis que Jean de Azevedo se classe troisième.
Quatrièmes, Giniel de Villiers et Dirk von Zitzewitz n’ont pas aimé du tout la piste étroite : « Il n’y avait pas de visibilité, raconte Giniel, on ne voyait rien à cause des grandes herbes et ce n’était pas facile d’ouvrir la piste avec une seule trace de moto en point de mire… Nous avons même dû pousser un portail qui n’était pas ouvert complètement… C’était trop lent à mon goût, avec trop de pierres… Mais demain, nous partons 4e, ce qui est une très bonne position ! »
Carlo de Gavardo, parti loin derrière, a remonté de nombreux concurrents et pensait être bien classé mais, une fois de plus, la mécanique l’a trahi et il s’est retrouvé sans frein en fin de spéciale… terminant 18e.

Demain, le Rallye Sertoes arrive à Natal, en bord d’océan et la spéciale traverse 12 km de dunes… rien n’est joué !

RALLYE SERTOES - 8e étape

8e étape : Floriano - Crateus
Liaison : 158 km – Spéciale : 279 km – Liaison : 85 km – Total : 522 km.


Le Rallye se dirige vers Natal et à deux jours de l’arrivée, il fait escale dans la petite ville de Crateus qui doit son nom à une tribu d’Indiens disparue.
Les pilotes sont heureux de trouver une piscine au bivouac de Crateus et une brise qui rend la chaleur un peu plus supportable.

En moto, Cyril Despres (KTM), malgré un problème avec la mousse de son pneu arrière, a remporté la spéciale et repris 4 minutes à Ze Hélio (Honda) au général. « Je ne pouvais rien faire, commente le pilote Brésilien qui se classe troisième. Les 140 derniers kilomètres étaient très rapides et j’étais désavantagé avec ma petite 450… »
Marc Coma (KTM) finit second : « C’était comme au Sénégal, raconte-t-il, avec du sable et des animaux partout. J’ai attaqué dès le départ mais après le ravitaillement c’était très rapide et je suis resté bloqué dans la poussière de Ze Hélio qui roulait à 130km/h. »
David Casteu (KTM) arrive quatrième après avoir tapé un cochon et, est sorti de la piste, heureusement, sans gravité. Ruben Faria, cinquième, a bien roulé avec sa Honda 450 et termine devant Viladoms qui avait joué la sécurité du point de vue pneumatique. « J’ai pensé que les autres allaient attaquer et brûler leur mousse et j’ai assuré mais ils ont eu de la chance car les derniers kilomètres étaient sablonneux, sinon… j’aurais pu bien me classer ! »
Au général, Ze Hélio est toujours en tête avec 1’56 d’avance sur Despres, 27’52 sur Casteu et 57’08 sur Coma.
Chaleco Lopez a été rapatrié à Santiago du Chili et pris en charge par les médecins chiliens. Il va bien et ne souffre d’aucune lésion grave à l’œil.

En auto, Mark Miller et Ralf Pitchford (Volkswagen), partis les premiers, ont suivi une mauvaise trace de moto et se sont retrouvés dans un cul-de-sac qui leur a fait perdre 3’. Giniel de Villiers et Dirk von Zitzewitz (Volkswagen), en ont profité pour prendre la tête. « C’était compliqué en navigation au début, confirme le co-pilote allemand, et il était facile de se tromper. Après leur erreur, Mark et Ralf n’ont pu que remonter dans notre poussière… »
Belle spéciale pour Kritsztof Holowczyc et Jean-Marc Fortin (Nissan Overdrive) qui terminent en deuxième position : « Nous avons doublé de Azevedo après 40 km, commente Jean-Marc, et cette fois, averti la veille par la FIA, il nous a laissé passer. Ensuite, nous sommes remontés dans la poussière de Miller qui nous a servi de lièvre, 1’30 devant nous… »
Pas de chance pour Carlo de Gavardo qui marchait très bien et était cinquième au général, il a cassé la boîte de transfert à 30 km de l’arrivée et rentre par la route…
